Without an early meeting, Hastings never occurred, and, ironically, this saved King Harold's life, ensuring the war would drag on for over a decade. The influx of Norwegian armies forced King Harold and his Saxon armies to weigh themselves down in the north, allowing the Normans to land unopposed.
The Saxons secured an important early victory in which they managed to kill Harald's son and heir, Duke Magnus, but more on this later. Without Stamford Bridge, Harald never died, and with Harald still alive, the Norwegians began landing in force, pouring across the sea by the hundreds. King Harald of Norway landed near York, but the Battle of Stamford Bridge never happened. The grand campaign starts right on the eve of the Norman invasion of England, and right away, things went crazy. I'm playing as a Welsh minor, and I haven't done too much- secured all of southern Wales and am well on my way to becoming the undisputed King of the land of Catherine Zeta Jones- but I'm still just a small fish in a giant, frothing fishbowl full of sharks. I'm not even twenty years in, and already things are going crazy. So I, uh, got my preorder yesterday evening. although if past experiences with CK are any guide, I'll probably get sidetracked and become the independent King of Wales and Ireland LONG before I work my way up the Norman hierarchy. Looks like that's about to change!įirst thing I'm gonna do is pick the smallest English noble I can find (not sure whether barons are playable or not, looks like counts may still be the lowest playable rank available) and set about weaseling my way to the English crown. Part Total War, part The Tudors, the original Crusader Kings was (and in many ways, still is) the deepest, most authentically "medieval" GS game ever made. In a nutshell, CK2 is a medieval grand strategy game that focuses not on mindlessly stomping on foreigners with a single monolithic knightly nation state, but on the down and dirty business of raising an aristocratic family and taking the often fractious feudal system for all it's worth. at least until the archbishop complains about their pagan subtext and I have to burn the jongleurs at the stake.įor anyone who hasn't been following this development closely, here's an advert, a trailer, and a preview.
